Bed Etiquette

For those of you who have been following my blog for a while, you will know the issues that I have with sleep (or lack of sleep) depending on how A's snoring is going (or not going) !  Now I have a new dilemma and I am hoping that someone out there will be able to help me with this - how do you know when you have taken up too much of the bed ?

For 24.75 yrs we had two single beds pushed together to make a king size bed (I like my space especially in the summer when it is just too hot to be lying skin to skin).  This meant that I always knew where my bed stopped and his bed started so when I was being greedy, I knew because clearly I was 'over the line' !  We would often play the 'cutting off body parts' game i.e. any bodyparts over 'the line' were fair game to the other person to cut off using their hand as an imaginary saw.

We have always had two doonas because I CANNOT stand the gap that resulted when we tried to use one doona/blanket.  A few years ago we bought two double doonas to replace the single doonas we had always had and they are even better - some nights we use one doona for both of us and some nights we each use our own depending on how hot or cold I am feeling.

When we were in NZ on holiday recently we stayed at Radfords Motel in Te Anau and the bed was one of the best we have ever slept in outside of our own.  I meant to ask the owner what type of bed it was before we left but I completely forgot so had to email her.  It was a Sleepyhead bed so we went and had a look at them over here.  We couldn't find the specific one that we had slept on as it was a commercial model but we did find one that we both liked that had separate pockets (can't remember the technical name they used) but basically when I move A doesn't feel it and when he moves I don't feel it which is great because I have often wondered about my tossing and turning being disruptive for him (stupidly given he continues to snore anyway so clearly it doesn't keep him awake when I toss and turn !!!)

Imperial 7 Firm
This is the mattress we bought

Our new mattress was delivered a couple of weeks ago and it really is very comfy BUT the predicament I find myself in now is that I don't know where the middle of the bed is - so where does my half finish and his half start.  Now I am sure I take up more than half the bed even though he is bigger than me.  I even find that I move my pillow over and we land up both sleeping on the same side of the bed with my legs stretched out to the end of my side of the bed (sort of right angles to my body).

Does anyone else do this ?  Or am I the only one who worries about how much of the bed I am taking up ?  I guess it isn't an issue for him because he hasn't complained about it.  When we had the two single mattresses there were a few occasions when I lay so far across on his bed he got up, walked around the beds and went and slept on my bed but he hasn't done that as yet with the new mattress.

Do you share your bed equally or does one of you hog the bulk of the bed ?

  1. I loved this post. I am apparently a covers stealer and a wiggle-arse but dont think I steal space. M is so hot (in the body temp way LOL) which is good in winter but not so in summer. I have enough power surges of my own without him contributing. Cant really help you with your question but thanks for the mattress recommendation.

    1. LOL - A is also hot in the body temp way !!!! And you are right - with my own power surges I don't need him around - I didn't even use the electric blanket this winter - a first for me !!

    1. I don't think I could sleep all the time on a double bed - occasionally we have had one when we have been on holiday and there definitely isn't enough room for me on them. I love our king size bed.

  3. There's never a concern about me taking up too much bed, I'm most comfortable facing out and as close to the edge of the bed as possible. Don't know why, that's just where I'm most comfy! I wish we had a king bed.

    1. LOL - that is often how A ends up sleeping - although I don't think it is so much by choice !!!

  4. I'm the opposite! My hubby always ends up on my side of the bed, but apparently I steal the doona, which is why he has to end up on my side of the bed! :)

    1. That is why we have two doonas - that way when I am cold and he isn't I can still snuggle under and get warm - and now we have the double size doonas each it is even better !

  5. I am the bed hog here, and the doona stealer too. I toss and turn too..and the doona rolls with me...so I end up with all the doona!!! I have woken up to find hubby on my side of the bed...though hubby reckons my side of the bed is the middle!

    1. A hasn't said much about me taking up more room although he did comment that he liked not having the wee gap between the mattresses there anymore - just means more for me !!!!!!!
Have the best day and thanks for stopping by !

  6. Hubby is 6'3" and as much as he denies it takes up 3/4 of the bed .. I'm usually hanging on so I don't fall out! And when he rolls over he takes the covers with him leaving me with none!! Quite a contentious issue at our house!

  7. Fortunately, we have a king size bed, so there's ample space and no one hogs space. Although, someone does tend to take over the doona. And that annoys me to no end! :)

  8. We have a sleepyhead kingsize bed and it is the most comfortable bed I have had, it is a latex and we do not disturb one and another when moving.
After a while with the kingsize bed you get a little "hill" in the middle of the bed and that seems to stop you from going totally rolling to the other side and is also a comfortable place to put your leg! lol! My hubby pulls the doona and sheet off to his side and I usually see it lying on the floor on his side when I get up in the night..Grrr..

    1. Thanks for the hint re the 'hill' in the middle - maybe when that happens I can use it for my leg instead of the extra pillow that I normally shove down between my knees !!!!!
Thanks for stopping by - have a fantastic day !

  9. I've never had that problem because I tend to sleep on the very edge of the bed anyway, and don't often move much. We've just ordered a new mattress with the pockets too - hubby flips over a lot in bed which disturbs me so much.

I can't stand having an airy gap between us with the doona. Separate doonas sounds like a grand idea!

    1. Sounds like how A sleeps on an occasions although his is probably more because of me than his desire to sleep there !!!!
If you do get two doonas - get double doonas - they are so much nicer than two single doonas.
Thanks for stopping by - have a great day !

  10. I don't think it matters really! I love sleeping all over the bed... so does the other half but we're quite snuggly usually so it doesn't seem to be an issue. If A doesn't mind, why should you? ;) xxx

    1. LOL - I know I shouldn't worry about him because he is old enough to stand up for himself - I just wondered how others managed to resolve it. When we went to the sleep guy he was surprised that I had perservered and let A stay in the bedroom but given we don't have a bed in a spare room (and the treatment table isn't that comfy to sleep a whole night on) there is only the lounge to go to. And, while I don't mind it occasionally, I don't like sleeping alone every night !!!!!!!

  12. Laughing - I'm a complete bedhog. We finally sorted it out with the arrival of the kingsize bed a few months ago. Still one duvet which causes some issues sometimes but at least I know I'm not pushing anyone towards the edge of the bed every night. The Artist (my husband) used to say he woke up each morning with a line running down the middle of his face from sleeping on the edge. :)

    1. I think A wakes up some mornings with that same line !!!!! And the worst is that I generally laugh at him because it looks so funny !!!!
I definitely couldn't do anything less than a king size bed - it's just too cramped if you go smaller.

  13. Hello, sounds like a great bed. Yes, I'm with the 'he can look after himself' brigade. We have a king too and it's rock hard and we hardly ever touch at night. Often a little person will sneak it, put their pillow down at the feet end and sleep in between us and we don't even notice. We must all not move much at night!!

    1. I WISH neither of us moved during the night !!!
I never forget our BIL and SIL stayed at our house when we were away on holiday for a few days before they moved to Darwin - well they couldn't get over how hard our bed was !!! We have been known to rearrange furniture in hotels and take the mattress off the base, put the base up against the wall and put the mattress on the floor if it is too soft !!! LOL
      Have a fantastic weekend !
