Food and Water


I have read blogs of people who have said how they used to drink so many soft drinks and now their drink of choice is water and I used to think, yeah right, like someone would choose water over a soft drink if they used to drink that much.

I have to confess - I now choose water over soft drinks !!!!!

When those people who know me read this - please don't fall off your chair - I know how totally unbelievable that statement is - but I also know that it is true.

With the eating plan that I was doing in conjunction with the naturopath, I only drank water for the first 23 days. And I was hanging out for a Coke Zero / Pepsi Max - I didn't really care which one, I just wanted a soft drink. And then I had the soft drink - and 4-6 mouthfuls later, I gave it to A because I couldn't handle the bubbles ! And I said to myself - it is just because you haven't had any for a while, don't worry, you'll feel like drinking more soon. And I sort of persevered because I got tired of drinking only water (I don't drink tea or coffee) but I really don't enjoy them that much. If I have a choice now, I will take a bottle of water over a soft drink.

I do occasionally drink one or part of one because I just need a change from water but more often than not I get dreadful heart burn and I would rather have the taste of water than the heart burn.

I have also noticed as I have been introducing additional foods into my eating plan, there are foods which just don't agree with me - not necessarily from a weight point of view but from an "I don't like how I feel when I eat that" point of view. An unsettled and queasy stomach is a good sign that whatever I just ate does not agree with me and I should probably cut it out of my diet. I have been a bit slack this weekend eating more than I should as well as some foods that I shouldn't but tomorrow is a new day and I have the fridge and pantry stocked with the foods that are nice to my body.

I am trying out some protein bars because the naturopath and my trainer have spoken a fair bit about how I need to increase my protein intake to help build the muscles that I am using with the training that I am doing. I am really not a protein person so thought if I could use protein bars to help get the extra protein in, that would be good. Can anyone recommend good protein bars for exercising ? I am also looking into using some protein powders in my breakfast smoothies - any recommendations ? My trainer sells Usana products but they are quite expensive - so if anyone has any suggestions for me, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

I also need to find out what the correct ration of protein to carbs is that I should look for in the protein bars.

I am sitting here now chuckling to myself - if anyone had EVER told me that I would choose a bottle of water over a soft drink or be talking about eating protein bars and using protein powders, I would have bet a million to one that they were off their heads !!!!! Lucky I never made that bet !

  1. lol, LindA. My choice of drink is wine! Seriously tho I do make sure I drink at least 3 big glasses of water a day. Cut down on my coffee to maybe three cups a day. I have never been a big fan of soft drinks but when I do i drink sprite zero. But not that much.

    I might get a bad response when I say I'm really amazed by the amount of people seem to be addicted to diet coke. Personally I think it tastes awful. "No offence, only my opinion"

    1. LOL thanks Lee-Anne. It is so easy to be addicted to a soft drink when that is really the only thing I drink apart from a glass of orange juice in the morning - can't say that I miss it now that I don;t have it that often.

  2. I am very impressed Hun. I am so bad at drinking water, I really havevto try harder. I drink a lot of Soda Water with lime, but I know that is so not the same. I am amazed at how far you have come in the past 5 or 6 months I have been following your journey. I am so happy for you and so proud of you. Xxx

    1. Thanks Sonia - it really has been an amazing time for me. I cannot believe how far I have come and how motivated I am to exercise, tone up and feel good about myself. The changes I have made mentally for me are probably the most profound given how hung up I have always been on the number on the scale. A long way to go still in terms of fitness but getting closer every week !

  4. I can't say that I always reach for water - most of the time yes, but I still love my pespi max and coke zero occassionally. When I was pregnant I gut it out completely (caffiene) and drank only soda water/sparkling water. As soon as that baby was out I was back on the stuff :)

    1. I honestly thought I would be the same but now I can barely manage to drink one can a day - I was probably drinking 3-5 cans a day during the week and more on the weekend !!!!!!!

      I do feel much better for it but can totally understand why people drink it - the bottom line is that it tastes nice !! It's just that now what used to taste nice has changed a little for me !!

    1. I only drink filtered or bottled water - I absolutely cannot drink tap water. It's amazing how I will often reach for water now - I NEVER thought I would be like this.

  6. Howdy ... I gave up again the diet coke / pepsi max last June and haven't had a sip of one since. Now I honestly don't want to put it in my body and can't stand the sight of it. Micko has finally given it up in the last couple of months ... it really is an addiction!

    With protein bars and powders there are so many to choose from ... protein bars - I really like the "...well naturally" ones ... you can buy 6 packs at woollies i think of mini ones, but there are bigger ones aswell. I think any protein bar is a taste that you have to become accustomed to.

    I mix protein powder into my porridge in the morning and I have tried sooooo many. The only one that tastes good in porridge to me is the Atkins Vanilla ... having said that I want to move away from it and just go to a flavourless one as it has so many unknowns in the ingredients.

    If I'm having it as a shake I'm ok with any of them, don't love them and don't generally have them any more but they were all ok .... it just must be the heat of the oats that does something to the flavour.

    1. Thanks Sammy. I still have the occasional coke zero or pepsi max - but only when I really have had enough of water !

      I have found with the protein bars it really is trial and error. I had one today Aussie Bodies and I didn't like it at all - the one I had yesterday wasn't too bad. Naturopath has recommended that I have the shake rather than the bars and after training - so not sure how I am going to work it into my eating plan.

      I often have a fruit smoothie for breakfast - maybe add it in there ? Only thing is that I always exercise in the evening - I guess I will eventually get it sorted.
