My Baby Turns 22

Yesterday my baby girl turned 22.

Yesterday she booked her flights to Sydney to go to the US Consulate for her visa interview.

Yesterday she took the day off work to help a friend lay flooring in her new home (why, I'm not sure, as she hasn't been hugely helpful around the house since we moved in - maybe it's because she really doesn't know how to lay timber flooring and so is there for the company more than anything ?)

Yesterday my baby wrote the nicest post on FB and tagged me in it - it's great to know that even though sometimes she is selfish and full of attitude, she does still love us !!!!!

Yesterday made me realise that next year she will be celebrating her birthday with her other family - I hope they make it a nice day for her.

Happy Birthday for yesterday K !

You have grown into a lovely young lady who I am proud to call my daughter.  While I am going to miss you dreadfully while you are away, I know that it will be such a great experience for you and I know that you will come home with wonderful memories - things that can never be taken away from you.  Know that Dad and I love you always and stay safe in your travels because you are priceless to us.

  3. It's so bitter sweet when they grow up. I wasn't jumping up and down with joy when the 3 older kids made there way into adult life..but I didn't feel as sad as I have with my baby boy getting older.

I'm holding on to these last few years...

    1. I totally get that - I am holding onto these last few weeks/months because I know when she gets back from the USA she really won't be my 'baby' anymore.

    2. Opps - my comment disappeared into the ether. I must have missed the news about K travelling to the US - very exciting for her, but I'm sure sad for you Linda. You may not have a baby anymore but you sound like you have a daughter who loves you.

  12. What a lovely post Linda and I can feel how much you will miss K already - I must have missed the news along the way of her heading to the US - how exciting for her but hard for you as her Mum.

    1. Yes - a really bitter sweet time. I know she will have such a great time and I know that I am going to miss her so much but, as Moms, we can't keep them close to us forever - we have to learn to let them go and find their own way in the world. (And be there in case they need us to help pick up the pieces !!!)

  14. Lovely, lovely! We are not quite there, but I see it on the horizon, and I hope when it comes I can be as selfless as you, wishing them fun on their adventure, instead of wishing them stay home with me...Good for you! And start saving for your visit!

  19. Can't believe you have a 22yr old! PS think the flooring gig was an excuse to not go to work on her birthday ;)

    1. I know - sometimes I wonder how I landed up with a 22yo too !!!!
You are probably right - an excuse not to go to work - better than sitting at home with 2 dogs who look to escape every chance they get.

  22. I know how you are feeling, its so hard when daughters move away, Remember though she will never be to far away, she will and always will be part of you, and Skype/Facetime/phones will keep you close. Hope K had a marvellous birthday.

    1. Thanks Jen - she said she had a good birthday - so that's always nice !!!! At least now days it's certainly a lot easier (and cheaper) to stay in touch. We couldn't afford to phone home more than once a month when we first came to Australia - but with calls to cheap to the US, we could probably say hi once a day (when we get the correct time zone thing happening !) - LOL

    1. Thank you Lizzy and you are right - there is a huge range of emotions - many of them triggered by her behaviour !!!!! When she is wearing 4 prs of cranky pants - I think it will do us good to be apart. When she is offering to help me with something around the house - I wonder how I will manage. And when I look at her sleeping in bed, my heart breaks because I know that I won't be able to do that for much longer.
      Have the best week !
