A Winter Post

OK - don't fall over now - I know I have already posted once today but after reading some of the winter posts over at Always Josefa - I thought I would add a winter post.

I feel the cold and I hate being cold. For many years I felt guilty when I was cold and got rugged up (yes, I should have included this in my "I Don't Feel Guilty" post but I forgot).  I felt like I was a big wuss and should just tough it out.

Then I realised that, honestly, if I was cold, I was cold, and it didn't matter a rat's butt whether anyone else was cold or not.  While I don't like being cold - I do love the opportunity to wear warm and comfy trakkie daks when I get home from work.  I do love the opportunity to use the colourful range of scarves that I own.  I do love the opportunity to wear the lovely jackets that I have bought since coming to the Gold Coast (yes, I know it doesn't get that cold on the Gold Coast - please see the second parargraph above !!!)

The first year we moved here, there was a cold spell during May of about 4-5 days where the temps got down to around about 5° - to say I nearly died is an understatment.  The coldest it ever got in Durban was probably about 14°-15° and then I thought I was dying from the cold.  We had no heaters.  We had no clothes warm enough to cope.  We lived in a tiled rental house with no rugs.  I froze my butt off.  I would drive to work looking like the Michelin man - wearing just about all the clothes I possessed that would fit on top of each other.  I do recall coming home from work and saying to A "If this is what May is like, we have to move.  There is no way I can live through winter."  We spoke to lots of people who assured us it was very unseasonal and so we stayed.  And bought clothes to suit.  And bought heaters to suit.  And when we bought our home, we put in reverse cycle aircon - we don't use either often but it is so nice to have just to take the chill off the air in the mornings and the evenings when we need to.

Now that I am more prepared for the cold, it is easier when I go out - I take jackets with me.  I have been known to go to a Suns game with a long sleeve T-shirt, my Suns shirt, a hoodie, a puff jacket that we bought when we went to NZ, a blanket, gloves and a scarf.  The good thing is that as a rule, I am generally not cold - unless A isn't there, sitting next to me adding to my warmth (or lack of it !!!).  We also have two jumpers (each) in the back of the car - just in case - A knows two things (OK - he knows lots of things but he especially knows these two things) - I wear twenty-five (or more) pairs of cranky pants if I have to wait somewhere and don't have anything to read OR I get cold !!!!  He is well prepared.

I would love to live somewhere where I could actually see the change of seasons in the trees - but in order to do that I would need to live where the winters are colder and I don't know if I could handle that.  So, for now, I will enjoy looking at photos that other people post of the trees changing colour and losing their leaves and be happy that I don't have to rake up and dispose of said leaves !

Whenever winter hits and wherever you are - rug up, snuggle down and stay warm !

Have the best day !

  1. Oh, I am getting more and more tempted by these winters of the North! As I sit here and type I think the ankles are actually frozen and that is with the heater on! It is so easy to assume that winter is exactly as we experience - everywhere - but it is not, not even close. Hope you stay warm and get to enjoy wearing those scarves - I love my scarves too - thank you for linking up to #convocoffee xx

    1. Yes, you should definitely consider a move up north - while I do complain about the cold, compared to the rest of the country (except maybe further north than us !!) we do have mild winters.
Thank you for hosting #convocoffee !!!
Have the best day and stay as warm as you can !

  2. I grew up in Germany with beautiful forests full of snow covered pine trees. It was absolutely beautiful. I've lived here for years and I still daydream about the changing of the seasons and white Christmases. Though I know in my heart of hearts that I'm a beach girl and I hate being cold. Doh!

I'll have to be satisfied with the occasional jump over the pond to NZ to get my snow fix.

    1. I totally agree - when we want snow we can hop over to NZ or go down to Tassie !
I would LOVE a white Christmas - we nearly had one last year but then plans changed and we landed up being here for Christmas - oh well, maybe one year !
      Have the best day !

  3. I love winter very much. The hot cuppas, the trackies, the snuggling under a warm doona, the cuddles and kisses, the opportunity to cover some excess fat and the overall sense of I don't feel like melting and burning up so much that I'm going to go out of my mind. Anyway, that's just me. However, I hate the wet winter days. They are miserable. Sunny winter days are best!

  6. Hmmm, I am one of those people who just don't feel the cold. Rather annoying, all my life, to hear 'aren't you cold?!' That said, I prefer the cold over heat as I feel the heat and there is only so many layers you can strip off to cool down! I would love a Gold Coast winter over a Melbourne one but forget me visiting in summer!

    1. LOL - you would rather have the 40° heat of Melbourne in summer ??? Maybe you are my Mom's child - she is the one who says "You can't be cold - it isn't that cold now." Haha.

  9. Love it. My reply to anyone who tells me its not cold enough for gas heater or electric blanket is take a hike.
If I am cold I am cold and I am not putting up with being cold for anyone or anything.
You ought to have seen me the weekend before last at the Olympic stadium watching the rugby. I looked like the michelin man and actually told people that I didnt think I would be able to sit down because I was wearing so many clothes. But saying that, I prefer the cooler weather to the heat of summer. Go figure.'

    1. It's generally my Mom and I don't like to p*ss her off too much !!!!! I know that feeling - I battled to turn the steering wheel but I wasn't taking any clothes off as the heater in the car didn't work !

  10. Oh I hate on the cold too! But even worse to me is humid hot. Bleugh! I don't cope with humid hot! lol

It seems like winter is confused here this year. Some of the trees have changed colour, but most of them haven't. The days are warm and the nights are like ice!

I have hidden one of the column heaters under my computer desk for the mornings the fire goes out now... I'm just a cold fish, it's something I can't deny!!

    1. I don't mind the heat but hate the humidity too. I had forgotten how humid Durban used to get until I went to Cairns for work - then I realised just how dry the GC is (even though sometimes here I complain about the humidity !!!)
      Have the best Friday !
