Gym 2 - Couch 0

Up until a few months ago, K and I were going to PT sessions twice a week.  Then something happened (I can't remember what) and we stopped.  And I noticed it but then the PT guy went and got a job working at the mines somewhere and so is only home one week every three weeks.  So that effectively put an end to our training, mainly because I wasn't up to trying to find someone else to train us.

The last time I was at the dietician, she mentioned that while my weight loss is going well for the moment, there is going to come a point when I plateau (as we all know) and that will be when I need to change my exercise routine around.  Now, while I am happy to go for a walk or get on my bike by myself, I'm not very good at doing circuits or anything like that.

K's friend won a package with a gym in Southport and they have a $55 3 week special which we were going to join - well K did join but it was the two weeks before A's birthday and I really didn't have the time to be fluffing around with PT sessions and going to a gym that is effectively 20min drive from home.

Then a few weeks ago, my SIL told me about a special at the gym which is only one road away from me - sign up during September, and they wave the $130 joining fee.  And, if two of you join up, the second person gets it at a reduced rate - bonus !!!!  You also get 7 days free trial.

Well last night I started my 7 day free trial.  This morning I know that I have done something different to just going for a walk.  But it's a good different.  It's that ache in my muscles that tells me I have worked them in ways they haven't been worked for a while.  It's a great feeling.

Last night I did a Body Conditioning class which was pretty much core work (although my feet and legs were a tad wobbly by the time I was finished that !).  As K couldn't get there for that class (started 5.30) and only the 6.30 class, I stayed and did the Body Pump class with her.  Well I definitely had a case of Elvis legs by the time I finished that.  I don't know if I could say I actually enjoyed either of the classes but that may just be because they are both done to music, I didn't know what I was doing, I couldn't hear what the instructor was saying and my head was turned a lot of the time while I tried to watch what they were doing and copy them !!!  Having said that, it did feel good.

Tonight I am off to the Body Tone class which I figure can't be too hard and then tomorrow I will tackle the spin class.  There is a spin class tonight after the BT class but I don't think I will be able to handle a spin class tonight and tomorrow night so I will just leave it until tomorrow.  K and I are going to sign up before she leaves for NZ so that we can get the special plus it will give me something to do in the evenings while I am on my own because they are both leaving me on Friday :(

Because it's Tuesday, it's time to join in with Jess from Essentially Jess for #IBOT.

Have the best day !

Are you exercising as much as you could ?
Have you got a plan in place
in order to fit into your
togs when summer gets here ?
Do you need to start now ?

  1. Well done! You're brave contemplating spin. It's one class I can't stand! Funnily enough though when it comes to my own exercise I've literally climbed back on my bike. Riding the kids around is my exercise now. It's pretty full on! Hopefully I actually wear my togs this summer. I think I managed to avoid them last year.

    1. I did a spin class a couple of times with K when she was at school and didn't mind it. Mind you, will have to see if I can find my cycling knicks because I am sure to need them if I cycle for an hour !!
I'm not sure I will get into togs this summer but definitely next year !!!
      Have the best week !

  2. Exercise is a dirty word to me - I *know* I should do some, especially now I am at my desk for 10 hours a day - but I just haven't found something that appeals. Yet. Hoping to try aquarobics this Summer and the pool is just up the road from my house, so no excuses!!!!

    2. I think finding what you enjoy is 3/4's of the battle. I like riding and I know that my dr has said that to help prevent osteoporosis I need to do weight bearing exercise and the dietician said cardio vascular - so I am really just trying to do all that I need to stay healthy !!!
      Have a great week !

  3. Oh you put me to shame!!! I'm a definitely plateau since trying to loose my last bit of baby weight and I know that I need to do some proper exercise!! It's mind over matter for me - maybe you have just given me the kick up the butt that I needed!! I used to love doing body pump classes - although I did laugh at you looking around not knowing what you were doing. Don't feel bad though you should have seem me at my first ever Zumba class - I had NO idea what I was doing!!! Have a lovely day xxx

    1. I'm glad it's given you the nudge you need - I hope you manage to find the motivation to get going !!! It was quite funny in the class with K because we were both a bit lost and at one point she thought I was doing the wrong thing and trying to show me to do something else but she was one move behind the instructor. Well I nearly packed up laughing at that !

  4. woooohooo look at you go woman!! i always reckon i need to do a class two or three times before i know if i like it or not... takes me a bit to work out the coordination and the music (and in the case of spin my butt boness...) it definitely sounds like you are coming out the other end of the tunnel and your world is sounding/looking much brighter, so happy for you xx

  6. Good on you for joining up! I am loving our new family gym membership. I did the HIIT class last night and I am finding it difficult to walk today lol. (high intensity interval training) I find it hard the first 2-3times in a class and then it gets easier as they are pretty repetative. Enjoy xx

It's good to know that it will be getting easier - LOL.

  7. Great idea the seven day trial and getting to trial a bit of everything. You'll find what you like and what you don't. I'm not a gym person at all. I have an exercise DVD I do at home (Jillian Michaels 30 day shred), I try to run 3 times per week, play netball twice and try and walk every other day. I love getting out in the fresh air. Works for me. When I can!

    1. As a rule, I'm not a gym person either. A and I joined a gym just after we got married but it didn't last more than the year because we had so many other things on after work. I think that it is easier because K is signing up with me and it's something we can do together when we can make the same classes.
I love walking too - I just need to do more than walk and home DVD's are not enough to get me going. I think it's great that we can all find what works for us and, even though it's different, none of them are wrong - they are just different ways to exercise !
      Have a great week !

  8. I am currently watching a double pram on ebay as walking toddler speed will not make me skinny!! If I can get a double I will be able to push the 2 little ones while the biggest rides his bike, thats the plan anyway!! I love aqua aerobics but it is only run during the day at the pool here which is no good for me at the moment. Go you at the gym and doing 2 classes in a row, that made me tired just reading it!!

    1. Oh I remember that days of toddler dawdling - it used to drive me insane !!!! Good luck on the pram - I hope you win it !
I wasn't sure I would manage the second class but when K got there, I said to her I would give it a go and stop if I felt it was too much - and I managed better than I thought I would - so that was nice.
Have a great day and good luck again !

  9. Good for you! It's a great feeling when you get into exercise - even if you feel tired after it, it's a good tired if you know what I mean....the gym can become very addictive, there are so many great classes on offer these days.

    1. I know what you mean. Before menopause and the associated issues - I was like that with running - it got really addictive. So much so, even if we were going out at night, when I got home from work I had to go for a quick 5km run - just so I didn't feel like I had missed out !!!! That is where I want to get back to !
      Have a great day !

  10. Well done you!
I don't tend to feel good during, after or the next day when I exercise like that. I am jealous. I would love to find something to hang on to keep me going back.
I manage the treadmill in spurts because I can watch the TV and not feel guilty that I am watching crappy soaps whilst I should be working. It would be good if I could change it up, but nothing inspiring has crossed my path in a very long time.
    Keep it up!

  17. I'm currently doing 3 sessions a week, the 3rd is just weights, and I've stopped running so I don't think I am doing enough to lose weight, but I seem to be doing enough to maintain. It's a bit frustrating, as I've still got 7kgs I'd like to lose, and I don't know if it's going to happen. Will be interested to see how you go with the gym. I've wondered if I should join one for the days I don't have the PT. I wish I could train 5 days a week, but that'd be $50/week, and I think a gym would be cheaper, plus she doesn't have 5 session a week. I need to get back to running but now that it's getting hotter, I don't see that happening much. I hate the dreaded plateau. I've basically been on my plateau all year :( xo
